Freeze and Hot-Tap Case History #39
June 2025
Objective: To change out compromised production flow-back equipment on dual string well.
Well Information: Leak on remote well spotted by operator/helicopter. Coil TBG/dual string
flowing gas from bottom zone with leak @ surface above hanger. Shut-in pressure @ 400kpa.
Procedure: Access into remote location via helicopter. Freeze/Hot-Tap Heli-Portable equipment package transferred in 3 loads (1:30 hrs) 10 kms away from staging area. Leak below isolation valve was partially patched on the exterior by customer personnel but still leaking gas. Shut in flow line and pressure built to 400kpa. Install 2 3/8 Hot-Tap clamp and drill, pressure test seal to1000psi. Hot-tap 3/4’’ hole then shut-in ball valve and remove drill. Install freeze equipment (freeze medium pre-packed lubricators and inject 20 liters freeze mud (pressure increase to1500kpa). Install cribbing around CSG/dual string and add dry ice. Inject additional 15L freeze mud (35l Freeze Mud total). Freeze for 3hrs to ensure integrity of freeze plug. Pressure test plug to 1000psi (10min), bleed off pressure for a successful negative test (10min). Remove upper assembly of washed-out valve/connections and install new production equipment to achieve well control (completed on Day 1). Day 2 we returned via helicopter to rig out/pack equipment and check on well conditions. Day 3 helicopter returned to remote location to transfer equipment back to staging area, then return to base.
